Development of National Standards for the Assessment of Internationally Qualified Nurses and Midwives for Registration and Migration
During 2007/2008 the ANMC undertook a project to develop national standards for the assessment of internationally qualified nurses and midwives for registration and migration.
The aim of the project was to research and formulate national standards for the assessment of internationally qualified nurses and midwives who apply for registration in, and migration to, Australia, irrespective of their country of origin.
The project was undertaken to coincide with the work of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in April 2007 to progress towards the introduction of national registration for health professionals by July 2010.
A final report from the consultant was presented to the June 2008 meeting of the ANMC Board.
The report comprises two documents:
- The literature review and draft standards
- Implementation Strategy for the new standards.
The eight Australian state and territory Nursing and Midwifery Regulatory Authorities confirmed the implementation of Standard 2 as of July 1 2009 and have given their support to the implementation of Standards 1, 3-5 as of 1 January 2010. The possible introduction of Standards 6 in its present form or combined with a competency based assessment, is still very much in an embryonic stage with little detail available except for what is in the final report.
Funding for the project was made available from the Professional Services Development program from the then Department of Education, Science and Training.
