Welcome to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council Incorporated (ANMC)

The ANMC is a peak body established in 1992 to facilitate a national approach to nursing and midwifery regulation. The ANMC works with state and territory Nursing and Midwifery Regulatory Authorities (NMRA) in evolving standards for statutory nursing and midwifery regulation. These standards are flexible, effective and responsive to the health care requirements of the Australian population.

The ANMC is also an authorised assessing authority for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and undertakes skills assessments of internationally qualified nurses and midwives seeking permanent migration in Australia.

Whats New

  • Project to develop Accreditation Standards and Criteria for Courses leading to Re-Entry to the Register for Nurses and Midwives

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council is undertaking a project to develop accreditation standards and criteria for courses leading to re-entry to the register for nurses and midwives. The development of these accreditation standards and criteria will complement the work already completed in the development of national standards and criteria for the accreditation of nursing and midwifery courses leading to registration, enrolment, endorsement and authorisation in Australia.

A Steering Committee has been established to develop the standards and criteria and a consultation draft has been prepared on which the ANMC now seeks your feedback. There are three draft standards and criteria - Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses and Midwives. (As these standards and criteria are for re-entry to the register and a Nurse Practitioner must first re-enter the register as a registered nurse there are no standards for the Nurse Practitioner.)

To assist you in providing feedback on the standards there is a "feedback questionnaire" below. Please use a separate form for each if you are commenting on more than one set of standards. Also attached is a literature review and while we are not specifically seeking feedback on it you are welcome to provide comment on the questionnaire. The closing date for feedback is Friday 19 March 2010. The ANMC thanks you in advance for taking the time to respond with your comments.

  • National Workshops on the ANMC Professional Practice Framework

    Victorian PPF Workshops Cancelled
At the request of the Nurses Board of Victoria, the ANMC  confirms that the PPF workshops scheduled to be held in Victoria have been cancelled.

    PPF Workshops Commence
It is an exciting time for nursing and midwifery but is, of course, not without some level of anxiety as always accompanies any major change. As this change approaches the ANMC with funding from the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing will be undertaking a program of 35 information workshops in each state and territory, with the exception of Victoria, to provide information to nursing and midwifery educators and senior clinicians with responsibility for the education of practicing nurses and midwives. The workshops focus on the suite of professional standards developed by the ANMC which support professional practice of nurses and midwives, the Professional Practice Framework (PPF).

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) has worked with the State and Territory Nursing and Midwifery Regulatory Authorities (NMRA’s)  professional and industrial bodies, the Australian and New Zealand Council of Chief Nurses, consumers and government  to develop national standards for the statutory regulation of nursing and midwifery. These standards (known as the professional practice framework) are variously implemented by the NMRAs under their respective legislation.

The ANMC emphasises that the current PPF, as with any standards should be understood to be a set of living documents, the components of which are subject to change though the underlying principles of accountable practice remain the same. Old standards may be replaced by new standards, or revised and updated.

Currently, each state or territory’s nursing and midwifery regulatory authority (NMRA) establishes what standards apply in their jurisdiction. This is commonly a combination of selected ANMC national standards together with locally developed standards. In the new national scheme, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) will establish the applicable standards. It is each nurse and midwife’s responsibility to know what professional standards apply to their practice at a given point in time.

The workshops will equip nurses and midwives responsible for the delivering education to registered nurses and midwives with the information and tools to inform nurses and midwives about the PPF, their responsibilities regarding the PPF and the role the suite of documents have in the daily practice of nurses and midwives.

Registrations for the workshops have been excellent with all those scheduled currently at or near capacity and consideration being given to offering further workshops in some areas.

Please note that the Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA) has endorsed the Professional Practice Framework workshops. Attendance attracts 5 RCNA Continuing Nurse Education (CNE) points as part of RCNA's Life Long Learning Program (3LP).

The 35 workshops are offered across 7 jurisdictions and registration is not jurisdiction specific. You are welcome to attend any of the workshops.
