The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council was appointed as the independent accrediting authority for nursing and midwifery under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS) commencing July 1 2010. It sets standards for accreditation and accredits nursing and midwifery courses and providers.

The ANMC continues to be the authorised assessing authority for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and undertakes skills assessments of internationally qualified nurses and midwives seeking permanent migration in Australia.

Prior to July 1 2010, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council worked with state and territory nursing and midwifery authorities in evolving standards for statutory regulation of nurses and midwives.
