Welcome to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council Incorporated (ANMC)
The ANMC is a peak body established in 1992 to facilitate a national approach to nursing and midwifery regulation. The ANMC works with state and territory Nursing and Midwifery Regulatory Authorities (NMRA) in evolving standards for statutory nursing and midwifery regulation. These standards are flexible, effective and responsive to the health care requirements of the Australian population.
The ANMC is also an authorised assessing authority for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and undertakes skills assessments of internationally qualified nurses and midwives seeking permanent migration in Australia.

During 2007/2008 the ANMC undertook a project to develop national standards for the assessment of internationally qualified nurses and midwives for registration and migration.
The aim of the project was to research and formulate national standards for the assessment of internationally qualified nurses and midwives who apply for registration in, and migration to, Australia, irrespective of their country of origin. The project was undertaken to coincide with the work of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in April 2007 to progress towards the introduction of national registration for health professional by July 2010.
A final report from the consultant was presented to the June 2008 meeting of the ANMC Board.
The final report comprises two documents:1. The literature review and draft standards
2. Implementation Strategy for the new standardsThe eight Australian state and territory Nursing and Midwifery Regulatory Authorities confirmed the implementation of Standard 2 as of 1 July 2009 and have given their support to the implementation of Standards 1 and 3-5 as of 1 January 2010. The possible introduction of Standard 6 in its present form or combined with a competency based assessment, is still very much in an embryonic stage with little detail available except for what is in the final report. Funding fo rthe project wwas made available from the Professional Services Development Program from the then Department of Education Science and Training.
- Continuing Competence Framework
The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council is pleased to announce the completion of its project to develop a national framework for the demonstration of continuing competence for nurses and midwives (The Continuing Competence Framework). The Framework was endorsed at the ANMC February Board meeting and can be downloaded from the link below. Whilst the legislation in some states and territories prevents the Framework currently being adopted in those jurisdictions it is hoped that the Framework will be adopted with the commencement of national regulation in 2010. All nurses and midwives are encouraged to download and view the Continuing Competence Framework.
